In The Days Of The Old Waratahs

They’ve gone once more to the well

with souls that are parched and dry

and they look for their youth

to give memory truth

in those days of the long goodbye.

They greet like yesterdays news

amazed at lines, grey and age

and it soon turns to mirth

regardless of girth

and the passion of young men’s rage …

… in the days of the old Waratahs.

What’s now is quickly dispensed

cast aside to get to the well

as old faces remove

each line, tick and groove

with stories they just must retell.

Long minutes dust off the hours

in smiles, handshakes and tears

as only mates can

unafraid to a man

of yarning and rolling back years …

… in the days of the old Waratahs.

If only we could pocket this magic

allow them escape to this myth

so that once in a while

they could thrust hands in and smile

at the spring and the cricket and life.

All men should find time for reunion

but this group are different by far

they once went to bat

under a royal blue cap
